The University of Tennessee will play in the championship game against Stanford. This is the first time in 16 years they will play against Stanford for the Championship. Stanford is the top-ranked women's college basketball team right now. Tennessee beat Louisiana State at the Final Four, making the winning basket with just one second left on the shot clock.
This is the Cinderella story about Pat Summitt and her Lady Vols. Summitt, the all-time winningest coach in NCAA basketball history (men's or women's), with 947 victories, is once again in another championship game. Last year, 2007, they won and brought home a seventh NCAA basketball title after thrashing North Carolina(#2) in the semis 56-50, and 15th-ranked Rutgers in the Championship at 59-46.
Pat Summit is a consummate leader, coach and educator. When asked what her secret is, she gives all the credit to her players. She has been the Lady Vols coach for 34 years, and will continue to be the backbone and spirit behind the Lady Vols Basketball Program.
Along with all her "firsts" - the first at going international to play and many others - she is the first Women's Basketball coach to reach the $1 Million dollar mark in salary. This last year she was offered and accepted a 6-year extension to her contract, bringing in $1,125 million and is going to be there earning over $1.5 million by the 2011-2012 season.
At this time, Summit is short of her 1000 wins mark by 53. She should be able to reach that mark by 2009, as the Lady Vols usually win right about 32 wins per year, consistently. Pat recruits the players herself, and starts out as just "Pat." She is definitely a role-model and a huge supporter of the team. She continually gives 110% and helps her players, with positive support, to give 110% as well. With Pat Summit, what you see is what you get. She is family oriented, down-home, and one of the all-around greatest coaches in the collegiate system.
